On Saturday 6th June, Ayr Camerata played its summer concert to a sold-out audience in Ayr Baptist Church, proudly sponsored for the second year running by the Ayr office of Holmes Mackillop Solicitors.
The programme opened with Gli Ucelli (The Birds) by Otterino Respighi, the prelude of which was made famous as the signature tune to the BBC game show ‘Going for a Song’ that ran from 1965 to 1977.
There then followed a wonderful performance of Mozart’s much loved Clarinet Concerto in A, with guest soloist Abraham Gonzales, a professional musician from Tenerife now living and working in Ayr.
To close the evening the orchestra played Beethoven’s famous 5th Symphony, the four opening notes of which (short-short-short-long) are often referred to as ‘Fate knocking at the door’. This symphony is credited as establishing a trombone section as an integral part of a symphony orchestra.
Ralph Riddiough, director and head of corporate at Holmes Mackillop said “Music is such an important part of a community and Ayr is blessed to have such a fine amateur chamber orchestra on its scene.
“We are delighted to support this wonderful group for a second year. On a personal note, it was a thrill to play in the trombone section this year and to hear Abraham, who taught my children when they were at school, deliver such a compelling solo performance.”
Chairperson of Ayr Camerata, Pat Spence, added “On behalf of the whole orchestra, thank you to Holmes Mackillop for sponsoring our summer concert again this year. It gives us such a boost to have this contribution to our running costs and to be able to plan ahead for another exciting year of music making.”
