Holmes Mackillop director brands Trump’s assertion that diversity and inclusion were factors in the Washington plane crash as offensive

Karen Condie, head of the Employment Team at Holmes Mackillop Solicitors, has branded US President Trump’s assertion that diversity and inclusion were factors in the Washington plane crash would be ludicrous was it not so offensive.

According to Condie, Trump’s recent rant is part of his mission to drive home his opposition to what are known in the UK as equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) polices.

“The aim of these is in the title: equality and we still don’t have it,” she said.

“For this reason, the last thing we should be doing is getting rid of them but, like any policy, we should be reviewing them and regularly: are they being applied fairly, are they achieving our aims and what exactly are we aiming to achieve?”

Condie said that we have seen in recent years unintended consequences with EDI practices resulting in unlawful discrimination.

“The police and the RAF have both been found to have unlawfully discriminated against white men with a tribunal finding Chesire police discriminated unlawfully on the grounds of not just race and sex but sexual orientation where the claimant had all three characteristics they didn’t want – male, white and heterosexual.

“I say ‘unintended’ consequences, but some may argue white males have had it too easy for too long. But unlawful discrimination is always unfair. Parliament’s Education Committee’s 2021 report confirmed white boys eligible for free school meals persistently underperform compared with girls and their peers in other ethnic groups. Discriminating against them when they apply for a job isn’t helping.”

Condie stresses that EDI policies are important but in drafting and implementing these we need to be clear on what we are aiming to achieve.

“Have achievable targets been set and are these reflective of our community? The aim is a positive one, but it can too easily be perceived as negative as the police and RAF have found to their costs and the cost of a young person’s future career.”
