Nicholson Cycles, the long-established independent family-owned retail cycling business based in Dundee, has instructed Shepherd Chartered Surveyors to bring it to market for sale as an operational entity including the property and trading business as the owners prepare to retire.
Owners Bryn Williams and Margaret said: “After many wonderful years serving our amazing customers and being a part of this incredible cycling community, it is with mixed emotions that we announce our retirement and the upcoming sale of Nicholson’s Cycles.
“Running Nicholson’s Cycles has been a labour of love for our family, and we are deeply grateful for the support and loyalty our customers have shown us over the years.
“We have had the privilege of meeting generations of families, countless cyclists from around the world, sharing stories, and helping customers find the perfect bike for their adventures. It has been an incredible journey!
“We are actively seeking a passionate entrepreneur looking to own a thriving cycling business with a storied past and limitless potential who shares our passion for cycling and the local community. Someone who will carry on the traditions and values that have made Nicholson’s Cycles a special place for cyclists of all levels.”
The business is located within the Albert Street district centre, one of the major district centres of Dundee, about a mile northeast of the city centre. The retail showroom with workshop, storage and staff accommodation is situated on the northern fringe of the Albert Street district centre facing the northeast arterial route enjoying a high-profile location at a busy four-way junction.
Shepherd partner Gerry McCluskey said: “Our clients wish to arrange a sale of this very prominent and well-known property with the benefit of the ongoing business as an operational entity. The accounts for the business reflect a well-established profitable operation.
“In addition to revenue generated through the retail business, there is an advertising hoarding facing Forfar Road which generates a modest income. The agreement currently operates on a year-to-year basis and prospective purchasers may wish to agree a longer-term arrangement with the tenant.”
Offers of £225,000 are invited. Interested parties should contact the sole selling agent on 01382 878005.

Notes to Editors
- The original business was opened in 1949 by Jack and Irene Nicholson. Jack was a member of the Dundee Thistle Cycling Club and a good amateur rider.
- The site of the original shop was 15 Arbroath Road, Dundee. The shop was a magnet for all level of cyclists during the 1950s and 1960s. Brands such as The Flying Scot, Holdsworth, Bob Jackson, Falcon, and Raleigh were much sought-after bikes.
- Into the 1970s, the business relocated to the current site at 2 Forfar Road, Dundee. Jack and Irene retired.
- The Nicholson name continued to flourish throughout the 1980s under the guidance of Jack’s son-in-law Bryn Williams and Jack’s daughter Margaret.
- The brand names have changed, but the family tradition continues. As the shop moves into its 75th year of trading, Bryn and Margaret have made way for their son-in-law Colin. Colin is ably assisted by Mark, over 35 years’ service and Billy, 30 years’ service. Tracy is the latest edition to the team having served more than five years
- Electric bikes (e-Bikes) have become one of its specialties. With so many people getting into cycling and choosing to commute via cycling, the popularity of the electric bike is snowballing. E-bikes are ideal for those who want to cycle but are not as fit as they used to be. E-bikes also mean that the whole family can cycle together regardless of their individual fitness levels.
- The shop also stocks an excellent range of quality cycling products.
