Wbg offers practical advice on how to deal with overdue invoices

With reports of Scottish businesses grappling with a surge in overdue invoices reaching a three-year high, Wbg, one of Scotland’s leading independent specialist full-service accountancy firms, has said that he who shouts loudest gets overdue invoices paid first.

According to new research from R3, overdue invoice numbers in Scotland rose by over 44% over the last year. The number of companies with overdue invoices on their books rose by almost 28%, the largest percentage increase of all the UK regions and nations.

Mark Mulholland, partner in Wbg’s Business Advisory department, notes that while most businesses now use electronic software and apps for credit control by automatically issuing payment reminders, these are no substitute to picking up the phone.

“While most businesses already use apps, you can’t beat getting on the phone, because it’s often the case that he who shouts loudest gets paid first,” he said.

“If you’re struggling with overdue invoices, seek to build up a good rapport with customers that owe you the money. But if you’re still having problems with payment, don’t be afraid to put suppliers on stop – too many people are too nice – and take legal action if necessary.”

Mulholland advises that regulated sectors have payment terms and conditions they must adhere to.

“Housing Associations pay invoices within 30 days,” he said. “And if you’re dealing with a government department, make yourself aware of the payment terms of these regulated sectors.

“And as there are likely to be more debts arising in the short term as changes in the living wage and Employers National Insurance Contributions start to affect businesses, it’s important to address overdue invoices as a matter of urgency.”

Mr Mulholland advises seeking advice on these issues from an accountant or, matters are already pressing, an insolvency practitioner.
